Dane Mitchell - Collateral

Dane Mitchell was the winner of the Trust Waikato National Contemporary Art Award - the prize money ($15,000)sponsored by Trust Waikato, the award is initiated by WSA (2000) and administered by the Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato. The Award has drawn must attention because of the general vehement and negative responses to winners such as the very first winner in 2000, Sean Kerr with his photograph of a plastic soap dish.
Others that have managed to piss off the conservative art public are:
Rohan Weallans: To the Moon and Back - layered paint peeled back and suggestive of female genitalia.Patrick Lundberg: Untitled - a piece of found wall.

It is very surprising the to find that there has been so much emotion, anger and negativity.
Judge, Charlotte Huddleston is confident in her selection of Collateral as the winning work.

MOUNTAIN an Underwater Collective Exhibition at Ramp Gallery

The Underwater Collective are:
Glen Leslie
Alister Selliman
Jared Benwell
Marama Mayrick

The Underwater are among some of the most talented artists emerge in the last few years from the Hamilton 'Underwater' scene.
They are self-effacing street/gallery prophets and their work is as fresh as it comes: directly from their collective psyche straight to you.
Brilliant to watch a live jam in action (see black and white work) which the Body Corporate are very pleased to be the new owners of.
These works are in constant state of flux throughout the duration of the exhibition at Ramp Gallery (Collingwood Street, Hamilton, Aotearoa New Zealand).

MOUNTAIN will close on the 27th July with a bang.

Brian Eno Illuminates Sydney Opera House June 09

As an art maker and a curator, I can honestly say that no painting or art work 2D or 3D has quite had the same ability to nurture my brain to think in an abstract was as the soundscapes and music of Brian Eno. It has largely been purely artist/musicians whose music comes from the depths of the psyche that has influenced me most and fed my mind.
Devo, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Mahler, Traditional Samoan Chants, Gregorian Chants,Tchaikovski, Mozart, Sibelius, Kate Bush and the B52s even, had a profound effect on my thinking as a young woman growing up in a small forestry town. Eno and these other sound architects cultivated fertile soil for ideas from their ideas; prompting me to think and to translate their ideas from my own polynesian paradigm. Translating their sounds, their alien ideas and the aesthetics of their album art became somewhat of a way in to European thinking and Western Art that I had never found possible by just looking a books.
Jim Wyley my art teacher introduced me to all of this. Cheers Jim! and all the other great minds!

ALBUM REVIEW
?
PACIFIC HEIGHTS
In A Quiet Storm (Truetone?Recordings 2008)
?
This has to be my favourite record of recent times without a doubt..! Pacific Heights is the solo creation of Devin Abrams, who is also from?NZs?pioneering LIVE drum n bass band?Shapeshifter. This is his second full length LP, which musically, steps away from his traditional liquid d n b production of previous releases. Im my opinion Devin is one of those over achieving musical geniuses, who can pretty much play any instrument, and does so with that freaky next level vibe that all us?musos?wish we obtained. In A Quiet Storm shows us Devin's natural ability to write, produce and collaborate with some of?NZ's?most respected vocalists, making this record his most mature, musically satisfying release so far. Stand out tracks for me are 'Peace' which features the silky vocals of Joe?Dukie?from FatFreddies?Drop, also 'Breathe' which features the honey styles of?Pdigsss?from?Shapeshifter. I'm really impressed with newcomers?Jdubs?and Aeries, who deliver convincing raps in tracks 'Dreaming' and 'Aint?Gotta?Hold Over me', while Ladi6 and Lisa?Tomlins?show us why they are NZ divas! But my most favorite tracks are 'TK Funk,' 'Make It Easier' and 'The Show Is Over' which feature the breath taking, buttery vocals of Mara TK, absolutely dripping with soul sex baby!

BRANDING?He Tohu

If you haven?t yet seen or met our?tohu, let us introduce you!

Reitiki?was designed by Otis?Frizell?and represents the?koruru(carved face) at the top of our?Tikidub?whare?or "house".?

Rei?means "sacred" and?Reitiki?to us is the overarching vision we must always aspire towards, representing Tiki at his utmost potential, therefore all of us at our greatest potential.? You may see him around us a lot, if you have one of our?tshirts, badges or hats featuring?Reitiki, we hope you wear him with pride knowing he is the absolute pinnacle of our whare who guides us every day.
?
Maurioho?is our?Heitiki, based on a doorknocker we had on our homestead back door growing up in Christchurch (we never used the front door!).??Over the years, our mate?watched us grow, saw us play, fight, visit thewharepaku?(outhouse), work and come and go about our daily lives. ?Mauri means "lifeforce" while oho is to "awaken" or "surprise", and in his role as doorknocker that is exactly what?Maurioho?used to do.??The term?Maurioho?can?also describe those wonderful moments in life where you may experience a fleeting sense of absolute awareness, when all makes sense - when you're in "the zone".
?
To acknowledge our old friend?today as the realisedMaurioho?is a reminder to us to always value our past and connection together as whanau (family). To look after the gifts we have inherently received, and to respect all the people that come into our lives and influence us also - that means you.

Stations of Cross - Easter Installations< Hamilton New Zealand

Title: Resurrection (After Apple)I
by Leafa Wilson
In situ installation
Frankincense and Myrrh/ Tarpaulin/ Plywood, Luminous Paint,Three Floodlights, Stones
2009

The most recent images are of the resurrected resurrection. On literally the third day of the installation, the structure collapse like a foal trying to walk on ice and I had only an hour and a half within which to reconstitute the installation with what was left. The first reconstruction was a bit 'slap-dash' because of time constraints, but the next night I had the help of my daughter Faith and we wiped all the water off and reinstated various parts of the interior to make it more aesthetically tidy and 'Billy Apple - like' in essence.
My thanks go to Craig Wilson, Nehemiah Wilson, Gemma Taylor, Stu Barris and Faith Wilson for their assistance.
